Buying vintage Chanel secondhand is one of the smartest moves in resale — if you know what you're looking at. Here's what we check on every piece before it goes up for sale.
- Serial number and hologram sticker. Since 1984, most Chanel bags carry an interior serial sticker. The format and placement changed over the decades, so the number alone isn't proof — it needs to match the era of the bag's construction.
- Stitching. Chanel's diamond quilting is famously precise. Uneven stitch length or misaligned diamonds are the first sign of a replica.
- Hardware weight. Authentic CC turnlocks and chain hardware have real heft. Lightweight, hollow-feeling hardware is a red flag.
- Leather smell and texture. Genuine lambskin and caviar leather age in a specific way — softening and developing a light sheen rather than cracking or peeling.
- Interior lining. Font, color, and placement of the interior stamp are frequently copied but rarely copied correctly.
When in doubt, a piece bought from a reseller who documents condition thoroughly is always safer than one bought blind.
